What is Telepediatrics?

Telepediatrics is the use of virtual interactions between providers, patients under the age of 18, and their parents or caregivers. These types of interactions facilitate specialist consultations, diagnosis and treatment, and patient education. Pediatric telehealth is used for both acute and chronic conditions, and often targets medically underserved rural and inner-city populations. Common conditions supported by pediatric telehealth include asthma, diabetes, cardiac conditions, epilepsy, and mental health disorders.

Providers use telehealth services to improve connections with pediatric specialists. Often, pediatric telehealth services are based in the emergency department, pediatric wards, or non-pediatric intensive care units. These remote consults have been shown to reduce unnecessary patient transfers and overcrowding in the ED, as well as increase provider and patient satisfaction.

Oregon Health and Sciences University was able to save $4.2 million on medical transport alone by treating 750 patients remotely.

InTouch Telepediatrics Solution

Our telepediatric solutions incorporate all elements that are required to provide remote care for pediatric patients. Built on the backbone of our network, we provide medical devices and software apps for remote consultations, access to peripheral devices for screenings, and workflow integration with EMRs and imaging systems for documentation and consultation purposes.

InTouch Health customers have pioneered the field of telepediatrics and have been able to provide significant benefits to their network of patients, including:

  • Making appropriate transport decisions
  • Allow suitable patients to stay in their own communities
  • Provide pediatric coverage to outreach locations
  • Improve the comfort level of community physicians in dealing with severely ill or injured children
  • Increase family and staff satisfaction

Pediatric care often results in the need for life flight or air transport in order to move patients to appropriate facilities with care. By implementing telepediatric programs, our customers are able to safely avoid many of these transfers, which can cost the health system $10,000 or more per transport.
